African Canadian Community Coalition Raises Serious Concerns
About Black Experience Project Report

Since November 2016, JCA’s Director Responsible for Advocacy, Yolande Davidson, has been engaged in advocacy around the completion of the Black Experience Project (BEP), and in particular the final report, as part of a small coalition of community members that includes members of the Tabono Institute.

Over the course of several months, the coalition met and corresponded with staff from the Environics Institute as well as the BEP’s funders to provide feedback and culturally appropriate analysis, with the goal of ensuring that the report fully reflected the realities experienced by Black residents of the Greater Toronto Area. The final BEP report that was released on Wednesday, July 19th is a direct result of this advocacy, and advice and feedback provided by the coalition significantly informed the drafting of the final report. Attached is a press release to which JCA is party, regarding the release of the final BEP report and next steps being planned by the coalition. The release details about a community research forum that the JCA Director Responsible for Advocacy and Tabono Institute are planning for fall 2017 to delve deeper into the BEP findings, fill in the gaps in the report and land on concrete next steps to leverage this research for the benefit of the community.
