Overview of the Connection Project – Serving Caribbean International Students with the GTA

August 2018 – June 2019, The Jamaican Canadian Association (JCA) received the Multicultural Community Capacity Grant from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration.

Purpose: The purpose of the grant was to implement the JCA Connections Project, focused on engaging
international students ranging from 18 to 35 years old studying at Ontario colleges.

Action: During the JCA Connection project JCA connected with Caribbean international students from various colleges within the GTA and strengthened their social, professional and educational networks, supported student leadership and civic participation; provided  workshops in the areas of leadership and governance; partner with at least four new community partners and engaged  volunteers in the project.

Long-Term Goals Sustainability – The JCA Connect project will continue to focus on sustainability and meeting the needs of community members
o Continue to network, collaborate and build partnership with colleges and universities within the GTA and provide cultural resources, details and events for all Caribbean international students

o  Provide opportunities for Caribbean international students to participate in cultural events and programming, while maintaining a sense of belonging and connection

o  Provide opportunities where international students can meet other international students, JCA members and community members at JCA, noting JCA is a cultural community hub where students can network

o Utilize data collected to further develop and plan intentional workshops, webinars and events based on student
needs

o Continue to network and build relationships with community partners, while ensuring students are provided with accessible resources and networking opportunities
